For as long as I can remember, I have been obsessed with drawing and depicting the very things that I see in excruciating detail. I just feel like I become lost in the journey of creating a portrait, and this helps when becoming connected to the subject of my work. Before I even consider drawing, I study intensely who it is that I am drawing.
My work more specifically is a study of what makes human beings interesting, whether this is from an emotive or physical context. There are many artists that inspire my way of producing art and creating a theme for it. From the very intense hand paintings that signify inner turmoil by Paolo Troilo and the very meticulously attentive drawings by who I consider to be an Emotive Realist, Kelvin Okafor. However, I'm beginning to find out who I am as an artist and feel ready to expose my work in galleries nationally, or more ambitiously, internationally.
Predominantly, the artistic style of my work is Photo-realism and Hyper-realism using methods such as drawing and painting; my intention is not to create a replica of a photograph. My practice is a consideration of photographs only as references, a resource that inspires my work to be beyond what a photograph can do. Not only this, my ambition is to conjure a narrative that best represents my subjects honestly. This is done through careful consideration of composition and the technical ability to draw lifelike images of these characters. My work is often inspired by TV shows and I often take what I have learned from these shows thematically into my own work, which observes closely the people around me. Social Media is a topic that engages us all, my work currently looks at how this happens and how this impacts our lives on a daily basis. Eventually I feel like my practice will be leaning towards a more Expressive Hyperrealism as I consider the struggle to separate ourselves from the temptations of social media.

From as early as he could remember, Alex Bird has always been an emotional and highly sensitive individual. Inspired, touched and captivated by almost everything in his immediate surroundings. Around the age of 12 years old, Bird vividly remembers having a love and strong fascination for drawing with pencils as his chosen media to work with when creating the meticulous . He found the instrument to be a humble one and would often use the expression 'aliveness' to describe it's technical and sentimental value. What fascinated him most about pencils was that with single shades of lead, he could create tones and textures so defined and so abstract, an illusion of colour would be formed before him. He became heavily inspired by this notion and spent most of his time trying to utilise its technical use. Very much a perfectionist, Bird continues with extreme effort to master his chosen media and express his experiences surrounding the subject chosen. Ultimately, Bird intends to create art that prompts an emotional response to viewers. A response that arouses the feelings of enchantment, reflection, stillness and awareness.
